Why I Added a Slashfriends Page to My Website

Ever since reading a thought-provoking article a few months ago, I've been on a quest to realign my media use and consumption with my values. It's been a year since I've bought anything on Amazon (that was the hardest!), and I quit nearly all social media.

What I Missed Most After Quitting Social Media

One thing I've missed, especially as I passed big milestones like my 25th high school reunion, is celebrating the life events and accomplishments of friends. Social media, for all its downsides, did give us a way to stay connected to the people we care about and cheer them on from afar.

How Nick Gray's Team Solved the Problem

I was thrilled when Nick Gray and his team (the brains and brawn behind my personal website) suggested I add a slashfriends.org page to my site. It's a simple concept: a dedicated page on your own website where you can celebrate and link to the people who matter to you.

I'm only just getting started, with a few of my nearest and dearest colleagues. You can read more about:

  • Dr. Tara Laughlin
  • Rebecka Ramos
  • Nishita Chheda, who I presented with at the 2026 1EdTech Digital Credentials Summit

  • Allison Zmuda
  • Kip Poole
  • Dr. David Reese

Join the Movement at Slashfriends.org

The slashfriends movement is about reclaiming connection on your own terms. Instead of depending on algorithms to surface your friends' updates, you're making an intentional choice to highlight the people who inspire you.

Aligning your media habits with your values doesn't mean cutting yourself off from community. It means finding better ways to stay connected, on your own terms, with the people who matter most. And sometimes, that's as simple as adding a page to your website where you can celebrate them.

Fill out the form on my site so I can add you too. Even better, join the movement at slashfriends.org and build community your own way.
