Hi, my name is Meghan Raftery. This is my now page – a running snapshot of what matters to me right now and projects I’m proud of sharing.

What I’m Up To
I’m spending most of my time helping communities, educators and kids get better at the skills that matter in real life, not just the ones that show up on a resume or report card.
A lot of my work right now focuses on communities of practice, durable skills, microcredentials, and how people thrive.
Projects I’m Excited About
- CROP Foundation: supporting the development of a curriculum and badging system for adults and kids with special needs who want to work in culinary fields.
- Defined Learning: building on-demand modules for teachers who use Project Based Learning. Helping educators and students see, track, and grow the skills that really stick.
- Edjacent: exploring how community members, such as care givers, can increase their voice and agency in emerging AI by co-designing solutions with stakeholders closest to the problem.
- Education Design Lab: We recently launched a $3.5M RFP to support projects that make workers’ skills and credentials more visible, trusted, and transferable. I will be leading the grantee community of practice and providing 1:1 technical support.
What I’m Reading
I am slowly reading a story a day from The Art of the Story, a collection I picked up from my local bookseller’s used shelf. I’ve never been a huge fan of short stories (because I get too invested in characters and want to know more), but I am loving this mix of diverse authors using the form in very different ways. It’s inspiring my own writing!

On Screen
Sharing this Experience Matters publication with a variety of audiences, leading an ongoing cohort of LAUSD first year CTE teachers learning about PBL, hosting a family voice group meeting for my kids’ school where they can ask questions to teachers about parenting gifted learners.
In Person
This month I’m speaking at the Open edX Conference with my colleague Dave McCool from Muzzy Lane. We’re talking about how AI can/should/shouldn’t be used to enhance performance-based assessment of durable skills.
Something Fun
I’m writing a novel! It will involve a research component that requires me to host some virtual and live meetings with friends, family, and acquaintances to get information about their lives. More coming soon!
